Skin Superfood: Our Spirulina Algae

Our Rift Valley Algae Complex is a very unique skincare ingredient in that it is a skin superfood, containing high levels of the most useful nutrients for the skin. The result – healthy looking skin that feels smother and appears glowing.

Our Rift Valley Algae Complex is bioengineered from Spirulina algae in our labs by our all women team of biochemists. Spirulina is a blue-green, spirular-shaped microalgae. It is known to be one of the few ingredients on the Earth that are classified as a “superfood”, which is one that contains a rich array of different and unique nutrients. Elethea’s meticulously harvested Spirulina algae contains high levels of the following:

  • All essential amino acids – the building blocks of protein. The collagen matrix of the skin diminishes as we age and by providing these amino acids, we can give the cells what they need to build collagen and elastin within our skin structure.
  • High levels of beta-carotene – an antioxidant that can be converted by the body to retinol (Vitamin A), which is known to promote collagen synthesis and increase cell turnover. Beta-carotene is an orange pigment which is known to make the skin look more golden coloured if taken in the right quantity through the diet (not too much though!).
  • Gamma-linoleic acid – an omega-6 unsaturated fatty acid that helps prevent water loss from the epidermis and can be converted by the body into an anti-inflammatory.
  • Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, C, D and E

In addition to this, substantial quantities of minerals essential for key biochemical cell-to-cell processes within the skin are present including potassium, zinc and calcium. What is particularly special about our Spirulina algae is the place it is cultivated: the Great Rift Valley in Kenya, widely known to be the origin of humanity. The minerals within the rocks in this part of the Earth have been studied and shown to be completely unique and not found anywhere else in the world. The Spirulina algae feeds on these rocks and the minerals are passed on to it.

Our algae is ethically cultivated and harvested at a social level with local Kenyans. There are strict guidelines in place to ensure sustainable farming of this algae without damage to the environment. Our algae is harvested twice a year, depending on quality controls like rainfall and optimum temperatures so as not to denature the protein within the Spirulina.

Furthermore, the cellulose cell wall of the Spirulina algae is not ideal for skincare purposes, so we have an intensive and complex 3-month process in our labs after we have harvested the algae to finely extract the key nutrients whilst disposing of the cell wall. This results in our Spirulina extract, which not only provides superfood nutrients to the skin, but also detoxifies and balances the level of moisture within the skin cells.
